AVATAR MEMORABLE QUOTES

Jake Sully:

"I became a Marine for the hardship. I told myself I could pass any test a man can pass."

[Asked if he has had any lab training. . .]
"I dissected a frog once."

"Everything is backwards now. Like out there is the true world, and in here is the dream."

"I can barely remember my old life. I’m not sure who I am anymore."

"I was a warrior who dreamed of bringing peace. Sooner or later, though, you always have to wake up."

"Who's got a date with the chief's daughter?"

"Tired of doctors telling me what I can and cannot do."

"I am a warrior...of the...Jarhead clan."

[Jake when he wakes up from his cryosleep]
"It didn't feel like 6 years. It felt like a fifth of tequila and an asskicking."

"Why don't you kiss the darkest part of my little white ..."

"The Sky People have sent a message that they can take whatever they want, and no one can stop them. But we will send them a message. Ride out, as fast as the wind can carry you, tell the other clans to come. Tell them Toruk Macto calls to them. Fly now with me brothers and sisters! Fly! And we will show the Sky People that . . . this is our land!"

Neytiri:

"I see you."

"Your fault! You are like a baby, making noise, don’t know what to do. You should not come here, all of you! You only come and make problems. Only."

"You have a strong heart. No fear. But stupid! Ignorant like a child!"

"You will never be one of the People! NEVER!"

"All energy is borrowed and you eventually have to give it back."

Dr. Grace Augustine:

"Who’s got my goddamn cigarette?!"

"You see? You see? They’re pissing on us without even the courtesy of calling it rain."

"I need a research assistant, not some jarhead dropout."

"Parker, I used to think it was benign neglect, but now I see you’re intentionally screwing us."

"So you just figured you’d come out here to the most hostile environment known to man, with no training of any kind, and see how it went? What was going through your head?"

"Relax and let your mind go blank. That shouldn’t be hard for you."

"Stay with the ship. One idiot with a gun is enough."

"Don’t shoot. You’ll piss it off."

"Norm, you contaminated the sample with your saliva!"

Colonel Miles Quaritch:

"This is Papa Dragon..."

"You are not in Kansas any more... You are on Pandora, ladies and gentlemen."

"Out beyond that fence every living thing that crawls, flies or squats in the mud wants to kill you and eat your eyes for jujubees."

"As head of security, it’s my job to keep you alive. I will not succeed."

"This low gravity makes you soft. You get soft, Pandora will shit you out dead with zero warning."

"I pulled your record, Corporal. Venezuela -- that was some mean bush. Nothing like this here, though. You got heart kid, coming out here."

[Discussing his head scars . . .]
"They could fix this if I rotated back. But you know what? I kinda like it. Reminds me every day what’s out there."

"You walk like one of her science pukes, you quack like one, but you report to me. Can you do that for me?"

"Well, I’d say diplomacy has failed."

"Jake, how does it feel to betray your own race?"

"If there is a Hell, you might want to go there for some R&R after a tour on Pandora!"

"That’s how you scatter the roaches."

Parker Selfridge:

"Grace. You know I enjoy our little talks."

"Look, you’re supposed to be winning the hearts and minds of the natives. Isn’t that the whole point of your little puppet show? If you look like them, if you talk like them, they’ll trust you?"

"This is why we’re here. Unobtanium. Because this little gray rock sells for twenty million a kilo. No other reason. This is what pays for the party. And it’s what pays for your science. Comprendo?"

"You know what? You throw a stick in the air around here it falls on some sacred fern."

Trudy Chacon:

"You should see your faces."

"Screw it. I didn't sign up for this."

"You’re not the only ones with guns, you pricks."

Dr. Max Patel:

"Here, tomorrow, oh eight hundred. Try to use big words."

"That’s a gorgeous brain. Nice activity."

"No, Quaritch has taken over. He’s rolling and there’s no stopping him."

Other:

[Jake facing a Thanator]
Jake: "What about this one, run? Don't run?"
Grace: "Run, definitely run!"

[Jake and Neytiri talking about banshees]
Jake:"How will I know if he chose me?"
Neytiri:"He will try to kill you."
Jake:"Outstanding!"

Lyle Wainfleet: "Look at all that new meat."
[Paraplegic former Marine Jake Sully wheels off the shuttle, Fike spots him]
Fike: "Check it out, man. Meals on wheels."
Lyle Wainfleet: "That is just wrong."

Tsu'Tay: "You mated with this woman!?"
Grace: "Oh shit..."

Jake: "Its over Quaritch."
Quaritch: "It ain't over if I'm still breathing."
Jake: "I was hoping you'd say that."

AVATAR FAQ

What is Avatar?

It's a completely original story that was penned by James Cameron over a decade ago. He was supposed to direct it after Titanic, but the technology required to realize his vision was not available.

This is the kind of hard sci-fi movie our generation has been waiting. It's not ridiculous like Lost In Space, Independence Day, Supernova, or Event Horizon, etc. This is THE sci-fi movie of our time, in my opinion.

Without spoiling anything, it's a sci-fi story set two centuries into the future and it revolves around us humans traveling to a planet to exploit its natural resources. Obviously a lot has probably changed since it was first written, but the story on its own is just amazing.

Then on top of that, it's going to be in 3D, and feature the first truly photo-realistic special effects in cinema... You kind of get the picture of why we're so excited about it.

What kind of 3D is being used?

The live action elements of the movie will be filmed with a dual lens stereoscopic camera co-developed by James Cameron. The camera has two lenses separated by the same distance that our human eyes are.

The lenses are able to focus on a close object by slanting inward, the same way your eyes do when you are able to attempt to look at your own nose. The end result should be the most convincing 3D cinematic experience ever.

Is this a live-action or a CGI movie?

It will be a hybrid - ie 60% computer-generated imagery and 40% live-action. The CGI elements in the movie will play such a pivotal role that two years of post production have been set aside for WETA (the New Zealand based special effects company founded by Peter Jackson) to work on unprecedented photorealism. In short, when the movie is released, audiences should not be able to tell what's real, and what's CGI.

What is the difference between digital 3D and IMAX 3D?

Basically, Digital 3D is like going into a regular theater, only the image and 3D both have a very high level of quality. IMAX delivers a huge sized screen that is slightly curved to fill some of your peripheral vision to give a more 'in the movie' type of feel. Basically its the size of the screen and the all encompassing effect that is the difference between IMAX 3D and Digital 3D. But from a review I read, the actual 3D effect of Digital 3D is superior, or more realistic, than IMAX 3D.

But all new IMAX theaters being rolled out from the summer of this year on are going to be Digital IMAX theaters, which means they'll be equipped with Digital 3D, so basically, you'd be getting the awesome Digital 3D on the huge scale of an IMAX theater...that would be the ultimate viewing experience.

Could Avatar have the same impact on audiences as Titanic?

I remember the excitement of the whole Titanic release very well and all the hate after it won all the awards. The way I look at it, Cameron's made his chick flick that will never be beaten, now he's making Avatar for the guys. Yes, a few women will go to see it too, but it's aliens falling in love and thats not really their thing. It's mainly a guys pic and I really think it's going to be this generation's Star Wars because it's going to be around for at least six months plus.

Fathers are going to be bringing their kids to this long after its released. I believe Avatar is going to have long term respect like the original Star Wars, they're going to be shouting out for sequels and of course there's going to be hate out there, theres always hate towards something successful.

What impact could Avatar have on today's younger audience?

I can't imagine what a kid's mind today is going to go through when they see something like “Avatar”. They're going to belong to that era where CG people look real and Lord of the Ring's Gollum's face is going to look as weird as the effects in the old Star Wars films look strange to a generation that is in its late teens now.

Today's eight to ten year olds are going to be the generation that is going to have a more holistic point of view of planet Earth and humanity's place in it. How many will grow up and having this point of view on mankind that really isn't comparable to previous generations.

I hope there's more films like this, that just slap us in the face and teach humans a lesson from time to time. Films have a tremendous power to educate and reach people if they're done well.

Why are the Na'vi Humanoid?

Generally, if a species is going to be technological it has to be big enough to haul logs for fire and build buildings and such, yet small enough to manipulate fire and build radios and things. It would need dexterity in the hands, and a way to get around that works on basically all terrain. On earth, that all worked out to mean we move by walking, have two hands with thumbs, and range from 4-7 feet tall generally.

Intelligent species would also be warm blooded and able to move around in all but the most extreme weather. Plus, a being would generally need to have a short connection from its sensory organs to its brain, so its reasonable to assume that an alien's eyes, ears, nose, and mouth would all be right close to the brain, and the brain would be armoured in a skull. So an intelligent alien would likely have a head like any earth animal.

Is this movie based on the Nickelodeon cartoon show, "Avatar: The Last Airbender?"

No. This is a completely original movie conceived of by writer-director James Cameron, about a decade before the cartoon series on Nickelodeon started airing. Because James Cameron's concept and screenplay was already registered and copyrighted, he still reserves the right to use the word "avatar" as the title of his movie, in spite of the cartoon series being more widely known. A separate movie adaption for the cartoon has been in discussion and was set to be directed by M. Night Shyamalan.

AVATAR TRIVIA

* Michael Biehn was considered for the role of Col. Quaritch. He met with James Cameron three times and saw some of the 3D footage, but in the end it simply came down to the fact that Cameron didn't want people thinking it was Aliens (1986) all over again, as Sigourney Weaver had already been cast.

* A casting call was posted on the website of Mali Finn Casting in early December 2005 for the female lead. The casting call was erroneously reported to be for James Cameron's Battle Angel (2009). However, Battle Angel will be the second of the back-to-back Cameron projects with a likely 2013 release.

* Promotional items were shipped to cinemas under the name "Project 880". The film was shipped in two parts in the UK, first part was reels 1-5 and reels 6-10 came the following day. It was shipped under the codename "Redbird".

* Avatars have five fingers or toes on their hand or foot, whereas the Na'vi only have four.

* The spiral-shaped, retracting creatures that Jake encounters early in the film are giant versions of Christmas Tree Worms, a marine invertebrate which is commonly kept in reef aquariums.

* The Na'vi language was created entirely from scratch by linguist Paul Frommer, who was hired by James Cameron to construct a language that was easily pronounceable by the actors, but lacking any resemblance or influence from any single human language. Around 500 words were created.

* Though he is not credited in the film, several of the locations have been identified as looking remarkably similar to paintings by English surrealist Roger Dean, most notably his works "Floating Islands" and "Arches".

* The Thai version of movie translates the word "Marine" into "Navi". (The Thai word for Marine is actually "Na-vig-ga-yo-tin", but to make voice over synced, the translator shortened it to "Navi".) So in Thai, Jake Sully is a "Navi" who becomes a "Na'vi".

* Even though the year the movie takes place is never stated, scenes of Jake Sully recording his video log show that the year is 2154.

* The biggest opener in the USA for a original film, previously held by The Incredibles (2004).

* To help the actors prepare for their roles, director James Cameron took the cast and crew to Hawaii, where they spent their days trekking through the forests and jungles and living like tribes (building campfires, eating fish, etc), in order to get a better sense of what it would be like to live and move around in the jungle on Pandora, since there would not be any actual jungle sets to aid and guide the actors and crew.

Zoe Saldana even dressed up as a warrior during these journeys, complete with an alien tail symbolic of the one her character has in the movie. These hikes were only done during the daytime, though; The cast and crew spent their nights at a Four Seasons hotel.

* James Cameron originally attempted to get this film made in 1999 as his immediate follow-up to Titanic (1997). However, at the time, the special effects he wanted for the movie ran the proposed budget up to $400 million. No studio would fund the film, and it was subsequently shelved for almost ten years.

* Announced on June 14, 2005 in the Hollywood Reporter, James Cameron's untitled "Project 880" is a parallel project being developed alongside Battle Angel (2009). It will use the same digital-3D camera system (developed by Vince Pace) and virtual production studio (developed by Robert Legato) that Cameron will use on Battle Angel.

* Seeing the character of Gollum in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) convinced James Cameron that CGI effects had progressed enough to make this film.

* The first James Cameron film not to feature any of his "regulars" (Michael Biehn, Bill Paxton, Jenette Goldstein or Arnold Schwarzenegger).

* Sigourney Weaver plays a 'James Cameron' persona for her character in 'Avatar'. Sigourney stated in an interview, "I teased him because to me I'm playing Jim Cameron in the movie as this kind of brilliant, approach-driven, idealistic perfectionist. But that same somebody has a great heart underneath. So I have to say I was always kind of channeling him."

* In much of the movie, Sigourney Weaver's avatar is wearing a Stanford shirt. Weaver attended Stanford in the early 1970s.

* This is the first time Sigourney Weaver has appeared in a James Cameron film since Aliens (1986), a gap of twenty-three years.

* Sam Worthington appeared in Terminator Salvation (2009), the fourth Terminator movie. His appearance in this non-Terminator movie is notable as James Cameron directed The Terminator (1984), Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), T2 3-D: Battle Across Time (1996) as well has having being a writer (creator of characters) on other Terminator franchise video-games and TV episodes.

* According to the read out and his statement made during the last log entry, Jake's birthday is August 24.

Six Degrees to Arnold . . . Avatar . . . Avanold!
Another killing time article to eat up the countdown to Avatar
By T. F. Powell

February 2009 - For the most part, the Avatar film makers have been laying below the media radar the last few weeks now. Avatar news of any substance is no where in sight, so let's kill some time with Cameron/Sigourney/Arnold trivia.

You may have seen the recent news that Arnold Schwarzenegger is slated to appear in Sylvester Stallone's The Expendables, a 2010 mega-action film packed with an all star cast of ass kickers including Mickey Rourke, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, and of course, Arnie and Sly.

This got me thinking about the film worlds of Arnold Schwarzenegger, James Cameron, and Sigourney Weaver, and how they connect in one way or another.

Borrowing from the Six Degrees to Kevin Bacon game, here is some trivia about our trio of stars who made their own marks as ass kickers with Aliens and Terminator. . . . .

At the time of his acceptance speech for all those Oscars for 'Titanic,' little did we know that James Cameron was actually giving us The Long Goodbye and moved into the 'hood of film documentaries for over a decade. Cameron is now making 'Avatar', his second film with Sigourney Weaver who plays the character Augustine. Arnold, who has appeared in three of Cameron's films, played a small role in only his second film as a hood along with actor Mark Rydell, who plays the character Augustine in the 1973 movie 'The Long Goodbye.'

Synchronized Beginnings

Sigourney and Arnold both began their acting careers in 1970. Arnold's very first role was for a feature film with the geographically labeled title 'Hercules in New York'. Sigourney's very first role was in television with the geographically labeled title 'Somerset' (Illinois). Inspired by '2001: A Space Odyssey,' the young Cameron began experimenting in film with his 16mm camera in 1970. In 2001, Arnold was filming the 2002 movie 'The 6th Day' playing a character named Adam, and Eve is the character Sigourney was playing while working on the 2002 movie 'Tadpole.'

In 1978 (the same year Avatar's Zoe Saldana & Michelle Rodriguez were born), Cameron had written and directed his first film, the low budget short 'Xenogenesis.' Also in 1978, Sigourney was working on her first film as the leading role (her first appearance in film was 'Annie Hall,' but it was a small role) for Ridley Scott's 'Alien,' battling an alien called a Xenomorph. Sigourney and Cameron's union began with the sequel to 'Alien,' the 1986 sci-fi action mega-hit 'Aliens.' In 1986, Arnold was filming a sci-fi action movie battling an alien in 'Predator,' released in 1987.

Joe, Josef, Joseph, Ellen, Ellen, Helen

Arnold has played characters named Joe (Stay Hungry, 1976 - the same year Avatar's Sam Worthington was born), Josef (The Streets of San Fransico, 1977 - the same year Avatar's Joel Moore was born), and Joseph (Raw Deal, 1986 - the same year Avatar's Stephen Lang played Joe in 'Band of the Hand').

Sigourney has played characters named Ellen (Aliens, 1986), Ellen (Dave, 1993 - the same year Avatar's Giovanni Ribisi played the character Joey Burke in 'The Commish'), and Helen (Copycat, 1995 - the same year Avatar's Wes Studi was working on the 1996 film 'The Killing Jar' as the character Cameron).

James Cameron has a daughter named Josephine. When Cameron was trying to break into the film industry, horror master Roger Corman gave him and Joe Dante a break by hiring them for his projects. Cameron has paid it forward to other upstarts by giving them a chance such as Tom Arnold for his first feature film break.

Royal Titles

In his Oscar speech, Cameron expressed with pride that he is 'King of the World.' He was also the designer for the Alien Queen in Aliens (1986). Sigourney portrayed Queen Isabella I in '1492: Conquest of Paradise' (1992) and narrated the 'The Snow Queen' (1992). Arnold played Prince Hapi in 'Around the World in 80 Days' (2004).

I suppose I have abused this game enough for now, but there are countless other tie-ins to be uncovered. If you can think of any clever connections regarding our star threesome mentioned above or any others related to Avatar for that matter, contact us and we will be happy to add them along with your credit.
