Sci-Fi Stands Tall in AMZ's Top Ten Sequels of All Time!
Six of ten films that made the list are Sci-Fi including Cameron's Aliens and Terminator 2
Using the same formula for AMZ's Top Ten Sci-Fi Films of All Time, we sampled ten online top sequels polls to determine AMZ's Top Sequels of All Time.
Based on their average ranking per poll, each film was measured how well it fared in the lists in the sidebar on the lower left. Only films that appear in at least five of the ten polls were measured.
Calculation Example: The Godfather appeared in all ten polls in the sidebar and holds the rankings of 1st (seven of them), 2nd, 4th, and 6th. These rankings total 18 divided by 10 (the number of polls it appeared), creating an average of 1.80 (The lower the score the better).

Spiderman 2
Score: 9.17, 6 Polls
"The Best Superhero Movie I've Ever Seen!" . . . . . Roger Ebert
Sam Raimi's follow-up to SPIDER-MAN finds Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) struggling to balance his everyday life with his alter ego as the web-slinging superhero.
Still carrying the burden of keeping his crime-fighting identity from those closest to him--including his longtime love Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst), his best friend Harry Osborn (James Franco), and his doting Aunt May (Rosemary Harris)--Parker must also face off against a dangerous new menace, Dr. Otto Octavius (Alfred Molina), a scientist driven mad by experiments involving powerful mechanical arms.
When the deranged Octavius (aka Doc Ock) forms an alliance with the vengeful Osborn, who blames Spider-Man for the death of his father, the wall-crawling hero is in for his biggest battle yet. With SPIDER-MAN 2, Raimi retains--and improves on--all the elements that made the first film so good, including an excellent story (crafted, in part, by acclaimed novelist Michael Chabon), tight pacing, and stunning special effects.

Mad Max 2:
The Road Warrior
Score: 8.8, 5 Polls
Won AFI Best Costume, Editing, Sound, and Production Design Awards.
Roaming the highways of post-apocalyptic Australia, years after he avenged his wife and son and his partner who were murdered by the motorcycle gang led by the evil Toecutter.
Burnt out former Australian policeman Max Rockatansky, now known as "The Road Warrior" searching for sources of fuel, stumbles upon a gasoline refinery home to a community of survivors who are struggling for survival.
He finds the community is being terrorized by a band of brutal motorcyclists led by The Humangus and his finest warrior, Wez, who bid to loot all the gasoline from the refinery for themselves.
The community hires Max, as Max agrees to help the community transport the gasoline across the highway and fight for freedom, as they are pursued by the Humangus and his warriors. Written by Daniel Williamson

The Dark Knight
Score: 7.00, 5 Polls "A haunting, masterful epic that's full of surprises!" Scott Mantz, Access Hollywood
The follow-up to Batman Begins, The Dark Knight reunites director Christopher Nolan and star Christian Bale, who reprises the role of Batman/Bruce Wayne in his continuing war on crime. With the help of Lt. Jim Gordon and District Attorney Harvey Dent, Batman sets out to destroy organized crime in Gotham for good.
The triumvirate proves effective, but soon find themselves prey to a rising criminal mastermind known as The Joker, who thrusts Gotham into anarchy and forces Batman closer to crossing the fine line between hero and vigilante. Heath Ledger stars as archvillain The Joker, and Aaron Eckhart plays Dent. Maggie Gyllenhaal joins the cast as Rachel Dawes.
Returning from Batman Begins are Gary Oldman as Gordon, Michael Caine as Alfred and Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox. The Dark Knight won two Osars: Best Achievement in Sound Editing and the late Heath Ledger won best supporting actor.

Aliens - 1986
Score: 5.9, 10 Polls Ripley (Sigourney Weaver), the sole survivor from the original ALIEN, is awakened after 57 years of drifting through space.
Her stories are disbelieved by Company executives who tell her that the alien's planet is now inhabited and colonized.
When contact is suddenly lost with the colonists, Ripley returns to the planet with a squad of marines, an android (Lance Henriksen), and a Company executive (Paul Reiser) with a mission of his own.
Once on the planet, no survivors can be found except for Newt, a little girl who awakens motherly instincts in Ripley just in time for the acid-blooded aliens to attack in what quickly becomes a one-sided battle for sheer survival.
Considered by many to be the best of the series, ALIENS is a fast-paced, high-intensity thrill ride that set a new standard for action films and cemented director James Cameron's status as one of Hollywood's leading directors following the success of THE TERMINATOR.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day
Score: 5.43, 7 Polls "James Cameron has again taken a first rate science fiction film and crafted a sequel that's in some ways more impressive." . . . Variety
A decade after Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) destroyed the original Terminator, a second unstoppable killing machine (Arnold Schwarzenegger) arrives from the post-apocalyptic year 2029. But this time his mission is to stop an even deadlier Terminator, the T-1000 (Robert Patrick), made entirely of shape-shifting liquid metal and determined to kill young John Connor (Edward Furlong), the future leader of the human resistance. Sarah, John, and the Terminator counter by going after the scientist responsible for developing Skynet.
TERMINATOR 2: JUDGMENT DAY is an action-packed blockbuster with some of the most amazing stunts ever filmed and ground-breaking, Academy Award-winning special effects. Star Schwarzenegger this time is made kinder and gentler against the silent, relentless T-1000. One of the most popular films of the 1990s, James Cameron's action masterpiece is both a thoughtful look at violence in human nature and an exciting, nonstop thrill ride.

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
Score: 3.40, 5 Polls
Won 11 Oscars including Best Picture, Director, Visual Effects, and Original Score
THE RETURN OF THE KING finds Middle-earth on the cusp of great change. Weary hobbits Frodo (Elijah Wood) and Sam (Sean Astin) venture further into the dark realm of Mordor, guided by the increasingly desperate Gollum (Andy Serkis). Amidst the chaos, Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen) must rise to his destiny, aided by Legolas (Orlando Bloom) and Gimli (John Rhys-Davies) in assembling allies for a massive battle.
As with The Two Towers, the director weaves various storylines together in one remarkable scene after another. Spectacular visuals complement Director Peter Jackson's sharp focus on the characters and their emotional battles. While the special effects help to create huge battles on a previously unseen scale, they never outshine the excellent ensemble of actors who bring the heart of the story home. A truly astounding work of filmmaking, The Return of the King skillfully concludes one of the greatest trilogies in cinema history.

Star Wars V: The Empire Strikes Back
Score: 3.00, 10 Polls
"It's a near flawless movie of its kind." Gene Siskel, Chicago Tribune
The Empire Strikes Back continues creator George Lucas's epic saga where STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE left off. The Rebel Forces--which include young adventurer Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), rogue pilot Han Solo (Harrison Ford), and the beautiful but seemingly humorless Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher)--have been successful in destroying the Evil Empire's Death Star.
However, the Empire's top commander, the terrifying Lord Darth Vader (played by David Prowse, voiced by James Earl Jones), is scanning the galaxy for the Rebels' secret location. After a visually stunning showdown on the ice planet Hoth, the Rebels are forced to flee, and Luke separates from Han and Leia.
Masterful storytelling weaves multiple, archetypal plotlines that pit Vader against Han and Leia as he desperately attempts to capture Luke for political--and, secretly, personal--reasons. Greek tragedy meets a philosophical hero's journey in EMPIRE, a remarkable sci-fi epic in which the performances are as powerful as the spectacular special effects.

The Godfather II
Score: 1.80, 10 Polls
Won six Oscars including Best Picture, Director, Writing, and Original Score
The sequel to THE GODFATHER tells the story of both a young Vito Corleone (Robert De Niro), newly arrived in America, and his son Michael (Al Pacino), forty years later, running the family empire.
On the streets of Hell's Kitchen in 1917 New York City, Vito is initiated into the ways of the local cosa nostra by his friend Clemenza (Bruno Kirby). After killing the local mafioso in a towel-wrapped gun, Vito becomes the new man to be respected and feared.
Robert Duvall (Tom Hagen), Diane Keaton (Kay Corleone), Talia Shire (Connie Corleone), and John Cazale (Fredo Corleone), reprising their roles from THE GODFATHER, are outstanding as the people forced to watch the new godfather's moral destruction. Robert De Niro, speaking in Italian, captures the mannerisms of Marlon Brando's Vito Corleone from the first film brilliantly.
